Honda Fit EV on the Horizon?

Honda unveiled and EV variant of their already fuel-efficient Fit at the Frankfurt Motor, in September. Fitted with a li-ion battery, it's reported to deliver an attractive 100-mile range per full charge (which takes only six hours using a standard 240-volt outlet) and reach 90 miles per hour.

While Honda has yet to reveal official specs on efficiency, we do know that they've optimized the Fit EV's fuel economy by adding a user-controlled, three-mode system. Economy mode promises to extend driving range by 17 percent compared to Normal Mode - perfect for driving in congested areas such as Troy and Albany, especially during the five-o'clock rush. Sport mode, designed for optimizing driving experience on the open road, adjusts performance for improved acceleration.

Beyond the multi-mode system, Honda has also added a unique in-dash display to alert drivers as when they should shut off power-draining features such as the AC and radio. And, to top it all off the Japanese automaker has designed the Fit EV to be easily integrated with drivers' smartphones. This added convenience will allow owners and leasees to start charges, check on charge status, pre-cool the car, locate charging stations and more.

Given the Honda Fit's laundry list of features and capabilities, it's easy to understand why drivers in Troy and Albany have been asking Rensselaer Honda: Will the Honda Fit EV ever make it to the U.S.?! Happily, all signs point to yes. Honda plans to showcase a production model of Honda Fit EV at the L.A. Auto Show in November, where they're expected to release more detailed specs (i.e., estimated mpg) and commit to specific geo markets.

To learn if the official verdict is yay or nay, stay tuned. Rensselaer Honda, located at 770 Hoosick Rd Troy, NY, is dedicated to keeping you informed. In the meantime, remember you can always browse our complete new Honda lineup (including the gas-powered 2012 Honda Fit, which gets up to 33 mpg hwy).
