Sponsored by Cars.com, the event served as a platform for automotive experts - and perhaps more important, a real-life family of four - to scrutinize all of today's prominent three-row SUVs for three full days. Among the many tests the judges put the SUVs through was a 230-mile drive. That of course was to determine how good each model's EPA-fuel efficiency withstood the test of unregulated driving.

It wasn't fuel efficiency alone, however, that put the new Honda Pilot at the top. Rather, it was the whole package, which includes 250 horsepower, four-wheel independent suspension, lower anchors and tethers for children (LATCH), vehicle stability assist, three-row side curtain airbags complete with rollover sensor, rearview camera, and rear-seat DVD, integrated sunshades, among many other features.

Speaking on the Honda Pilot SUV's performance in the shootout, one judge said, "...I'm not sure how you top it."¹ Another raved, "The [Honda] Pilot remains a nice balance of size, roominess, efficiency and versatility, and it appears that Honda is becoming more generous with features for the money."²
