How Hybrid Cars Work: 2017 Honda Accord Explained

The 2017 Honda Accord Hybrid has three modes. The EV Drive, Hybrid Drive, and Engine Drive. Each driving mode has their own function but they all work together to be very efficient.

EV Drive Mode

In EV Drive Mode you are only using the battery to drive the vehicle. This is done by the battery sending power directly to the power drive unit to the wheels. This mode is usually engaged while going down hill or in parking lots.

Hybrid Mode

In Hybrid Mode the engine is turned on but isn’t used to turn the wheels. In this mode the engine is solely used as a generator to charge the battery which sends power to the wheels.

Engine Mode

In this mode the overdrive clutch that is connected to the engine is engaged which allows the engine to send power directly to the wheels through the drive motor. Since there is no transmission this Mode can only turn on at highway speeds and will automatically turn off when slowing down. The engine also charges the battery when it’s running. Therefore once the battery gets fully charged the engine will turn off and the battery will start sending power to the wheels again until it needs to be charged again.
