IIHS Awards 2014 Honda Odyssey with Highest Safety Designation
Although the exterior updates that went into the 2014 Honda Odyssey minivan were minimal, it’s still a pretty impressive car. We’re not just talking about the new on-board vacuum (the first of its kind) either. See, the real meat and potatoes of the new Odyssey isn’t in its looks, but its structure, and it’s because of these that the minivan has earned the Top Safety Pick + designation from the IIHS.
The Top Safety Pick + is the highest safety honor that the institute has. It means that the minivan achieved a score of “good” on the four main safety tests, and no less than “acceptable” on the overlap test. It also indicates that Odyssey is more than just a comfortable minivan–it’s the safest in its segment by IIHS standards.
So what improvements made this possible? For one, the side curtain airbags of the minivan have been reworked so that they now extend further forward. Additionally, Honda opted to use higher strength steel in the body work and door frames, lessening the effects of an impact.
According to IIHS President Adrian Lund, this safety designation will make the Odyssey even more attractive to families. “Safety is high on the list for parents when it comes to shopping for a family vehicle,” he explained. “Consumers look for models with the highest safety ratings. Honda is ahead of many of its competitors in building state-of-the-art crashworthiness into its vehicles.”1
What does this mean? It means that if you’re looking for one a comfortable, accessible, and safe minivan, the Odyssey is a must-drive. Drop by our Troy, NY location today to set up a test run.
